INFORMATION ON ASPARAGOPSIS

Livestock and farm animals release methane gas after digesting their food. Methane gas is one of many greenhouse gases warming the earth.  According to an article published by Yale, "In California alone, 1.8 million dairy cows, together with a smaller number of beef cattle, emit 11.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent every year — as much as 2.5 million cars." Additionally, 15 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions come from livestock, which includes 1.5 billion cows. So what can we do about it? Studies have shown adding asparagopsis seaweed to 0.2 percent of a cow's daily diet can reduce over 80 percent of their methane emissions. Microbes in a cow's stomach take carbon and hydrogen and turn them into methane. Asparagopsis contains bromoform, which is a specialized cell that blocks these microbe bacteria. Testing also showed that the cows had healthier pregnancies, produced more milk, and suffered less from certain diseases than the cows that didn't eat seaweed.
